The Assignment
1. You will research one of the problems we discussed in class. You will take notes and keep track of the sources of your information in the manner we discussed in class (see your plagiarism handout under “Making Sure You Are Safe”). You may share research with another student in your class who is working on the same topic (but you don’t have to).
2. You will report the problem and a solution of your own in a written response whose format you get to choose (see “The Final Product” below).
Collecting Information
Gather information that answers the questions we developed in class. Use a variety of sources. You have to use at least three (3) different types, and I’ll give extra points if you use more. The common types are:
- Encyclopedia (whether on CD-ROM, on-line, or in book form)
- Book other than encyclopedia
- Internet site (other than electronic version of newspaper or magazine)
- Magazine (whether paper or electronic)
- Newspaper (whether paper or electronic)
Other types are:
- Radio programs
- Television programs
- Other audio and video sources
- Personal interviews
Remember that you need three types, not just three sources. For example, if you use Encyclopedia Britannica on CD-ROM, The World Book Encyclopedia in book form in the Media Center, and Grolier’s on-line encyclopedia, all three together qualify as only one type.
