The Big6
Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the Big6 are what we cover together in class before research begins. Parts 4, 5, and 6 are what you will be doing to find information, document your sources, and develop your end product. Refer to your Big6 notes whenever you have questions about the research process.
Taking Notes
We have already practiced finding the main idea in a paragraph. We have also discussed how you must write notes in your own words so that you don’t mistakenly use someone else’s words. You may find it helpful to review the following in your blue textbook:
- “Implied Main Idea, Identifying” on page 706
- “Stated Main Idea and Supporting Details, Identifying” on page 709
- “Paraphrasing” on page 206
- “Paraphrasing” on page 706
- “Take Notes” on page 205.
It is also a good idea to review the second page of your plagiarism handout for information on keeping track of which ideas belong to you and which belong to someone else.
I strongly urge you to write each note on a separate card or half-sheet of paper. This will ease the process of organizing your ideas when it is time to write.
